Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve is a bird enthusiast’s heaven located 13 kilometres outside of Klerksdorp in the North West province. Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve is fairly easily accessible to anybody who would like to take a day to immerse themselves in nature.
This acacia-thorn veld and grassland reserve is home to many diverse species of birds. Birds such as lark, owl, spoonbill, finch, grebe, robin, waxbill, courser and the intriguing secretary bird are some that call the reserve home. Nocturnal birds have also been spotted in the reserve, thanks to the overnight facilities made available to visitors.
There are camp sites and caravan parks in Faan Meintjies reserve and it is an ideal family holiday for weekend jaunts and longer stays alike. There are also picnic areas available, taking lunching out to a new, exceptionally tranquil level.
Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve offers access to both fauna species and flora species. It stretches over 1000 hectares and offers 2 looped routes of exploration: a 14 kilometre loop and a 28 kilometre loop. These are designed specifically so that one can get to the far ends of the reserve.
There are 3 seasonal dams that make an ideal home for the summer bird species while the disused quarry, 2 kilometres into the reserve, provides a home for the Cape long-claw, African pipit, chestnut-backed sparrow-lark, buffy pipit and the long-billed pipit. In addition to the spectacularly large number of bird species, Faan Meintjies is also home to a variety of other wildlife including the, zebra, giraffe and impala.
