The Purple House in Smithfield can accommodate up to 16 guests. The main house consists of the Pierneef Room for two with bathroom just outside the room, The Gallery Room for up to 4 guests and the Backpackers Gecko Cottage in the garden that can accommodate 5 guests on a backpackers budget rate. The Bluegum Cottage is situated at our house next door and offers two bedrooms. Downstairs a room with two single beds and upstairs a room with a Queen size bed extra length. The en-suite in the cottage has a walk in shower and an antique bath and basin. It offers a stoep upstairs where the views of the surrounding hills are fantastic. Come and visit the Purple House in Smithfield. This is where the famous South African artist J.H. Pierneef lived for 2 months in 1935 whilst working on his replicas of the bushman paintings in the hills of Smithfield. We have an Art Gallery and sell Antiques inside the house. We exhibit local as well as national artists and we highlight certain artists from time to time. Our Antique shop has some interesting pieces on display! Breakfast is available at R40 per person and we serve dinner if required at an optional extra.

Smithfield is situated on the N6 - 130 kilometers from Bloemfontein on the Main Road to East London. It is an ideal stopover for travellers from Gauteng to the Coast. We offer a half day tour of the various studios of the many artists that live in the town. There is nothing better than to meet and talk with the talented people of this gem of a small town!

This is where you will spend your night/s inside our house in the SAME room as did Mr. Pierneef. Please do not think that there are any lost paintings in the ceiling! We have done a thorough search and we found nothing.... only an old paintbrush! Our second bedroom is called the Gallery room as it is in the art gallery inside the house and it has two single beds and a double bed.... have you ever slept inside an art gallery? Now is your chance. We have a selfcatering cottage in the garden that can accommodate 5 or 6 persons in two rooms - The Gecko Cottage. One room has a double bed and the other room can take 4 single beds. DSTV is supplied, nice kitchen and bathroom with shower only. Attached to our house next door is The Bluegum Cottage. Two rooms - downstairs has two single beds and upstairs is a queen size, extra length bed with stoep overlooking the stunning hills around our town. The bathroom has a walk in shower and bath and basin. A really nice cottage and it is pictured here

Directions
From Bloemfontein take the N6 to East London. 130 Kilometers further is the town of Smithfield. Ask for the Purple House from anyone. EVERYONE KNOWS THE GROOVIEST HOUSE IN TOWN!!!. Alternatively the Main Road through town and turn left into Brand Street until you see the sign in front of the house
