While some may choose to relax and make tea or coffee in their rooms, many guests gather early at the boma for coffee before climbing onto an open vehicle for a game drive on Thanda Nani.

Unlike many of the private reserves in the Kruger Park area, Thanda Nani is home to a rare species breeding project and offers fabulous viewing of plains animals not usually seen. These include over 100 white and 20 black rhino, often with calves at their sides, and the majestic great antelope species of Africa – Roan, Sable and Tssessebe.

Stop by the dam to catch a glimpse of hippo and crocodile, as the herds come down to drink.

The lodge accommodates 60 people sharing in 30 comfortable thatched rondawels, all with air-conditioning and en-suite bathrooms. For many visitors, the atmosphere of the rondawels – round cottages inspired by traditional African homes and some named for the animals on the property – evokes the true spirit of the bushveld. Two rondawels, Giraffe and Waterbuck, are ideal for families, with accommodation for three or four people.

Across a wooden bridge from the main camp are the Roan and Sable luxury suites. With two en-suite bathrooms in each unit and a private verandah with views of the bush, tea and coffee-making facilities and mini-bars, this is the perfect place to unwind.

Back at the lodge, breakfast is served al fresco – cereals, fruit and yoghurt followed by a full farmhouse selection. Relax during the day or visit some of the many attractions in the area – a Swazi village, the Kruger Park or the nearby towns of Malelane and Komatipoort, the border with Mozambique.

In the late afternoon, there is the opportunity for a game drive and sundowners overlooking the plains. A full three-course dinner is served in the lodge beside a roaring log fire. Children are most welcome.

Directions
By road
Thanda Nani is an easy four-to-five hour drive from Johannesburg. The lodge gates are 11 kms east of Malelane on the N4 toll road, the Witbank to Maputo route.

Turn right at the Thanda Nani Game Lodge sign, enter through the gates and follow the graded dirt road approximately two kilometres to the lodge.

By air
There are daily flights to the new Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, outside Nelspruit, from Johannesburg and Cape Town. Transfers from the airport to Thanda Nani (70kms) can be arranged.
It is also possible to make use of the Malelane airport, 5kms from the lodge, for private or charter flights.
