The Five Assegais Fishing Lodge is a beautiful stone farm house from the turn of the century. The ideal retreat to set aside the troubles of the world. It is set in a 1,500ha nature conservancy (the only sound you hear here are birds and frogs). There are 4 large trout dams, lots of hiking trails, extensive gardens and a fragrant herb garden.

The open plan living, dining and kitchen are ideal for socializing and relaxing. A romantic fireplace keeps you toasty warm in the winter months. There is the full boutique of DSTV for those who want to keep up with the outside world.

The large veranda, with braai areas and a jacuzzi, overlooks a large dam and open grasslands. You can see the wildebeest and zebra grazing nearby at sunset.

The four large double bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms, white cotton linen, electric blankets and heaters. One room has twin beds. The Lodge sleeps 8 people. Additional mattresses can be provided for younger children (but not cots for infants).

Catering and self-catering options are available.

Self-catering is only renting the whole Lodge. It includes a regular cleaning service.

Fishing from 4 well stocked trout dams and access to a number of hiking trails is included. You can bring your own quad bikes and mountain bikes.

FLORA AND FAUNA
After a massive land restoration program (that continues today) this 1,500ha nature conservancy is now home to 109 different species of trees, game (wildebeest, blesbok, jackals, baboons, civets, hartebeest and zebra) and birds (bald ibis, louries, fish eagles and vultures to name a few). There is a stunning display of aloe flowers from June to August. The Uitkomst Falls are the second highest in Mpumalanga.

OOM PAUL KRUGER AND THE FISHING LODGE
Helskloof Gorge was one of the great climbs facing the wagoners that transported goods from Middleburg to the goldfields in Barberton. The original building of the present day Fishing Lodge accommodated a family that serviced these wagons and provided an ‘Uitspan plek’ at the top of the pass. Oom Paul Kruger himself owned this, a smart man who got a shilling or two off every wagon that required water and rest.
