According to Venda tradition King Thohoiyanda mysteriously disappeared with his sacred drum. Neither were ever seen again. Legend has it that the drum can sometimes be heard in the echoes of the cliffs surrounding Mashovhela pool.
Be absorbed by the Venda Culture, steeped in legends, filled with water spirits, guardians of hidden lakes and secret burial places.

Listen for the beat of King Thohoiyanda's drum at Mashovhela rock pool, the second most sacred place in Venda folklore. And when the sun begins to set, drums will call you to join in with drumming and dance to honour the dinner about to be served at our Venda styled, Mashovhela Lodge.

Tucked away in a steep valley, surrounded by impressive rocky outcrops, on the site of an abandoned Venda settlement, lies our small lodge which gets its name from the sacred Mashovhela rock pool, "Place where the drums beat".

Directions to MASHOVHELA LODGE driving from Gauteng

Drive North on the N1 (Toll road) until you enter Polekwane/Pietersburg
At the 3 set of traffic lights turn left. Signposted as preferred route for LDV's to Zimbabwe/ Makhado (NELSON MANDELA DRIVE)
Pass the Industrial Area for 3,5km
At the 7th set of traffic lights turn right. Signposted as N1 recommended Route & Airport (VERMIKULIET DRIVE)
Drive 4km to the T junction. Turn left onto the N1 " Pass the Airport & follow the signs to Makhado/Louis Trichardt
You will now drive north for about 100km (Toll road)
In Makhado/Louis Trichardt drive straight, passing 2- 4Way stops. Continue North passing a traffic circle. Set your odometer to 0 to measure 16km
Pass Ingwe Ranch (from here you have 2 km to go)
Pass the 120kmh speed sign and indicate to turn LEFT.
At MASHOVHELA LODGE (MORNING SUN NATURE RESERVE) turn left and enter our gate.
Follow the sand road and signs for 4km into the mountain valley, until you end up at the Lodge.
