Founded in 1995, Tau Game Lodge is situated in the malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve, on the border of Botswana. Accessible by scheduled flights from Johannesburg International and Sun City, or a few hours’ drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria, Tau (“the place of the lion” in Tswana) is the ideal place to spend a few days game viewing at the beginning or end of your holiday in South Africa.

Madikwe itself was established in 1992 when Operation Phoenix was launched to re-introduce previously endemic animal species to this
75 000 hectare over-grazed farming area.

Lion, cheetah, elephant, black and white rhino, and buffalo are among the 10 000 animals of 27 species which you can expect to see on morning and evening game drives, or indeed at the waterhole at the lodge, along with various antelope and other animals (General Game). In addition, over 250 species of birds have been recorded in the reserve.

Tau’s 5 star accommodation consists of 30 luxury thatched chalets, all with views over the surrounding area of game approaching the water hole. Each chalet ensures privacy with its own wooden viewing deck, en-suite bathroom, open-air shower, and air-conditioning and ceiling fans.

Couples travelling together or those with families may like to make use of the 2 corner units at either end of the lodge, consisting of 2 bedrooms linked by a shared lounge.

The main lodge is on two levels and consists of a lounge, bar, and dining area, all partially outdoors, and decorated with African artifacts. During the day you may like to relax next to the adjacent medium-sized swimming pool or in the privacy of your own chalet. Delicious breakfasts and lunches are served in the dining room, while the outdoor “boma” under the stars is usually the venue for dinner. The magnificent Spa Oasis offers relaxation treatments in 5 star facilities surrounded by the beauty of the African Bush.

Directions
From Pretoria take the N4 direction Rustenburg

From Johannesburg travel via Fourways to Hartebeespoortdam, following the signs to Sun City to begin with and once on the N4 continue this toll road to Rustenburg, Swartruggens, Groot Marico and Zeerust.

In Zeerust, turn right at President street onto the R 47 to Gaborone. You’ll reach the first Madikwe Game Reserve gate approximately 90km from Zeerust.

Pass all the gates indicating Madikwe and travel to the Kopfontein border post going towards Gaborone. Turn right onto the Derdepoort Gate Road, just before the border post and follow the road for approximately 10 km to the Tau lodge gate.
