Quietly perched on a rugged hillside overlooking the working Roman Catholic Mission of St James with a bird’s eye view over the picturesque and seemingly endless Maloti mountain range are the igneous rock buildings of St James Lodge.

These provide refuge to the weary traveler in this stark and remote land where the crow of the mountain rooster, bark of the shepherd’s dog and clanking bells of domestic animals wake you. The soft early light touching this kingdom in the sky encourages you to emerge from your cozy slumber and explore this enchanting but desolate land and embrace it’s rich and unique culture.

Our comfortable but rustic self-catering accommodation is in spacious rooms and cozy rondavels and sleeps up to 16 guests. There is no electricity at the lodge. Lighting is paraffin lamps and candles, and water is heated by a coal-burning boiler. Please note that St James Lodge is situated in one of the most remote areas in Lesotho resulting in facilities being basic and of a backpacker standard.

FROM SANI PASS - St. James Guest Lodge is situated roughly 1hr 15mins from Sani Top. - Take the road from Sani Top towards Mokhotlong. - You will pass through a few small villages on your way. - When you reach the T-junction at the ha Majekisani village, turn left towars Thaba Tseka. - The road winds down the Sehonghong gorge, crosses over the river, and up the other side. - The village immediately on your left as you climb out of the gorge is St. James. - The lodge is to the right of the church and has the red rooves. FROM FOURIESBERG / CALEDONESPOORT BORDER POST - St. James Guest Lodge is situated roughly 2hrs 30mins from Caledonespoort Border Post. - Follow the road into Butha-Buthe town and turn left at the T-junction sign-posted Oxbow / Sani Pass / Afri-ski / Mokhotlong / Litseng Diamond mine. - The road passes through the suburbs of Butha-Buthe then winds it’s way up and over an awesome mountain pass before reaching the highlands and ski-sloaps of Afriski. - Continue on the road past the diamond mine (beware of pot-holes!) and through a few more small villages, following the signs to Mokhotlong / Sani Pass. - As you reach the top of the hill on the outskirts of Mokhotlong, you’ll come to a T-junction sign-posted Sani Pass / Thaba Tseka. Turn right. - Roughly 1.5km along this road (turns to dirt shortly after the junction), you’ll reach another T-junction at the village of ha Majekasani marked Thaba Tseka / St. James. Turn right. - The road winds down the Sehonghong gorge, crosses over the river, and up the other side. The village immediately on your left as you climb out of the gorge is St. James. - The lodge is to the right of the church and has the red rooves.
