How to find Montusi mountain lodge From Durban 280 km Take the N3 Durban-Johannesburg. Beyond Estcourt, 6km after Shell Ultra City, leave the N3 taking the R74 direction Winterton and Northern berg Travel through Winterton (21km) to Bergville 28 km beyond Bergville, towards Harrismith turn left following the sign for Northern berg resorts, including Alpine Heath Travel towards the Royal Natal National Park for 6km only. Turn right just after the Tower of Pizza, following the signs to Hlalanathi, Alpine health and The Cavern. After 4km turn right at the Montusi / Alpine health sign Travel on this road for 3km , then turn right immediately after the concrete bridge and follow the sign to Montusi Travel 2km on this road. Drive SLOWLY. Watch out for cattle, horse riders and chameleons. Welcome. From Johannesburg Travel on the N3 to Harrismith. Take the N5 towards Bethlehem/ Phuthaditjhaba for 5km only (exit 29) Travel towards Phuthaditjhaba/Qwa Qwa for 8km only! Turn left on to the R74 in the direction of Oliviershoek Pass and Bergville The road is very bad for 14km. There are big potholes and stretches of gravel. It takes a small car about half an hour to cross this bad 14km stretch. You need to drive very slowly and carefully to avoid getting a puncture. The bad road can be avoided by taking the long way around on the N3 towards Ladysmith and via Bergville. See the attached documents “Harrismith to Montusi N3” for those directions. Travel for 35km past the Sterkfontein Dam. Caterpillar and Catfish Cookhouse (adjust your speed) and Little Switzerland down the Oliviershoek Pass. As the pass levels out, turn right, following the signs for Northern berg resorts, including Alpine Heath, Montusi and The Cavern. Travel towards the Royal Natal National Park for 6km only. Turn right just after the Tower of Pizza, following the signs to Hlalanathi, Alpine heath montusi and The Cavern. After 4km turn right at the Montusi / Alpine health sign Travel on this road for 3km , then turn right immediately after the concrete bridge and follow the sign to Montusi Travel 2km on this road.
