Accommodation near BAT Centre Museum

The BAT Centre is an arts and culture community centre which plays a pivotal role in Durban's creative scene. It is located off Durban's Victoria Embankment in the small craft harbour. It is housed within an old navy building. The centre was established in 1995 tofoster the port city's under appreciated art scene.

BAT is an acronym for the Bartel Art Trust,an important puzzle piece in the story of the centre's existence. This story begins with the eccentric figure of Hugo Bartel, an adventurer and successful entrepreneur who arrived in South Africa after driving across Africa from Tunisia. Upon his death in 1992, he bequeathed a healthy sum of money to startup a trust which encouraged the production and enjoyment of the arts. A research study was promptly set up to assess the needs of Durban's creative community and the BAT centre was established a few years later.

The centre aims to promote local talent and skills and support job creation in the arts by sourcing talent, imparting skills and developing markets. It also aims to provide a space where the Durban community can experience and enjoy art in all its guises from music and writing to all manner of visual art.

Among its offerings are a visual artstudio, galleries and shops, as well as various function venues which can accommodate a numerous types of events. One of the BAT Centre's unique offerings too is discussion groups where anything from art and writing to politics and entrepreneurship is discussed.

The BAT Centre also hosts regular arts and crafts markets and is an all-round exciting place to visit if you find yourself in Durban.
