The Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital is an academic hospital associated with the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. It is South Africa’s largest hospital and also the fourth largest hospital in the world.
Built initially as a convalescent hospital for British and Commonwealth Soldiers during World War 2, it opened its doors in 1941. It was originally named after a hostel owner, John Albert Baragwanath, who opened ‘The Wayside Inn’ in the area after the gold rush on the East Rand. Over the years, its size and scope increased and today the hospital has 3200 beds and provides employment to over 6700 staff members.
Soon after the assassination of Chris Hani, a prominent anti-Apartheid activist who was shot shortly after Mandela’s release from prison, the hospital was renamed to honour the freedom fighter. The Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital is located in Diepkloof, Soweto, a township south of Johannesburg. It is financed and managed by the Gauteng Provincial Department of Health and serves not only the large community of Soweto, but also referral patients from surrounding towns and cities, and even neighbouring countries.
Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, or alternatively just ‘Bara’, is an important teaching hospital, training South Africa’s young doctors and nurses. Bara also contributes a large body of medical research, particularly regarding the disease trends of the fluctuating poverty-stricken development of Soweto. This research is not only useful in South Africa but in other developing countries with large areas of poverty which are in constant flux.
