Located in Pretoria along one of the major roads through Gauteng, the Museum of Correctional Services is the only one of its kind in the country and is, in fact, one of only three major prison museums in the world.
The Correctional Services Museum is located within the Pretoria Central Prison, which is a maximum-security facility! What this means, is that in order to gain your free access to this infinitely fascinating museum, you have to walk through the operating prison filled with inmates dangerous enough to be housed in maximum security. Evidently this is museum with a difference!
An experience well worth it to get a sneak peak into what it looks like behind bars in South Africa. At the end of the walk through the prison, you arrive at the Correctional Services Museum. Displayed in this space are intriguing, make-shift objects confiscated from prisoners over the years; shanks, knives, tattoo needles, forged keys and dagga pipes are amongst the extensive collection of illegal contraband seized during prison raids.
Artworks created by residents of the prison over the years, some dark and haunting, are also on display. These pieces range from, drawings and paintings to sculptures and carvings. Often they are a reflection of the inmates themselves and their struggles, in and out of prison.
There
are photographic displays of inmates with their warders through the years, accompanied by an unpacking of the
development of the South African penal system, from the earliest, less humane imprisonment methods to today’s modern imprisonment techniques.
