Accommodation near Golden Gate Highlands National Park - 4
Nestled at the foot of the Maluti Mountains in the north east of the Free State province, near the land locked kingdom of Lesotho, is the Golden Gate Highlands National Park. It was named in 1875 by a farmer after he saw the last rays of the setting sun against the sandstone cliffs on either side of the valley near the Golden Gate dam. The park falls under the management of the South African National Parks authority (SANParks).
This national park covers an area of 340 square kilometres and is home to an abundance of fauna and flora. The wildlife includes animals like the black wildebeest, blesbok, eland, oribi, springbok and zebra, among others. It is also home to rare birds like the bearded vulture and the equally rare bald ibis. These birds breed on the ledges of the sandstone cliffs the park is named for.
Ribbokop is the highest point in the park and it has astoundingly beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. It is most popular to visit at sunset because of the beautiful red, yellow and purple hues which form as the warm shades of the point merge with the shadows cast by the mountains. This lighting and of course the overall landscape of the park, is a photographer’s heaven!
Points of interest within the park include the historic Van Reenen Family Graveyard, the striking Brandwag Buttress rock formation, Cathedral Cave, Vulture Restaurant and several lookout points such as Generaalskop (the third highest point in the park), as well as the Zuluhoek viewpoint.

Clarens
Still one of my favourite holiday destinations. So many beautiful, clearly marked and easily accessible hiking trails in Clarens and not too far away at the Golden Gate. The scenery that surrounds you is breathtaking. The quaint little shops, restaurants and coffee shops make this a unique destination.
