Hartleyvale Stadium is a sports venue which is primarily used for hockey events. The stadium is located in Observatory with views of Lion’s Head from a distance.
It was re-established as a hockey centre by the International Hockey Federation in 2001 in order to broaden South Africa’s competitive base at world level and aimed to boost our bid at hosting the 2004 Summer Olympics. While the bid was unsuccessful, the stadium has received much acclaim over the years and has held numerous regional, national and international hockey tournaments. The size of the stadium is large and can seat 3000 spectators.
Previously, the venue was the home ground for South Africa’s first professional soccer association, The National Football League (NFL). This league was established in 1959 and folded after 18 years, in 1977. While professional soccer teams no longer use the grounds for practice sessions or matches, games between amateur club are played on the smaller fields.
As the fields are illuminated by LED floodlights, the stadium is able to host night matches and practice sessions.
