The Klerksdorp Golf Club, with its 18-hole parklands golf course, is
somewhat of an oasis in the semi-arid landscape in which the town of Klerksdorp
is located. With its tree-lined,
lush-looking greens and myriad water features, it is in stark contrast with
the flat, monotone landscape which surrounds it. Klerksdorp, and subsequently
its namesake golf club, is located in the North
West province, on the N12 freeway, 45
kilometres from Potchefstroom, the province’s largest city and academic
centre.
The Klerksdorp golf course offers members
and visitors alike excellent facilities which make playing golf there nothing
short of a pleasure. The course itself, rated
par 72, is scenic and any round of golf is played to the soundtrack of
birds chirping away. It was built in
1889, making it a well-established course.
Some of the golf-related facilities are a
clubhouse boasting a restaurant, bar and
halfway house. As with many clubs of this nature, there are also excellent function facilities, which can be hired
out for a range of events from business conferences and birthday parties to
weddings!
Like any self-respecting club, there is
also a pro shop, with a pro on hand
to offer advice. One can also organise a
caddie at the shop as well as hire a
golf cart and even clubs. The driving
range offers a space to practise and there is a pro available for lessons.
Klerksdorp has a semi-arid climate, with warm to hot summer days, and cool, dry
winters, meaning the golfing season
there is year-round.
Other attractions nearby are the Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve, the Klerksdorp Museum, which is housed in a
converted prison, and numerous mining
shafts dating back to the 1880’s.
