Accommodation near Newlands Rugby Stadium

The Newlands Stadium, as the name implies, is located in the Southern Suburbs neighbourhood of Newlands in Cape Town. Its history dates back as far as the late 1800's but the stadium has undergone a number of reincarnations since then.

The land for the stadium was purchased in 1888 by the Western Province Rugby and Football Union and the first official match was played there in 1890. It was only 30 years later that the first stands were erected though but these changes set the stage for numerous developments over the proceeding years, which included, more stands, the enlargement of existing stands and a change of field direction to the North-South angle of today. Owing to sponsorship deals which have come and gone over the years the stadium's official name has continuously changed, although for locals it will always be Newlands Stadium.

These days the stadium has a capacity of 51 900 people, accommodated in various 'styles' ranging from seated to standing and the private suites or 'boxes' as they are colloquially known. It is frequently full because South Africans' obsession with rugby. The stadium is currently owned by the Western Province Rugby Union and is the home stomping ground of the Stormers team as well as the Western Province team - the reason it attracts rugby supporters! However, when rugby is not on the cards, the venue occasionally plays hosts to soccer tournaments - mainly the Ajax and Santos Clubs' games.

Visiting the Newlands Stadium is a really fun way to tap into South Africa's rugby culture. The usually running order for an outing to Newlands is finding a parking spot on one of the school fields near the stadium, cracking open a beer and getting a braai going. After eating, everything is packed up and supporters stroll down to the stadium itself, dressed in the appropriate team colours, face paint and all. At a match within the stadium, emotions run high and depending on who you support, you'll either leave the stadium very happy or very sad. Given that the fixtures are set for most weekends during rugby season (winter months), even if your team loses, there will always be the following week!
