Orient
Beach is located in the suburb of
Quigney in East London, one of the largest cities in the Eastern Cape
province of South Africa. It lies to the east
of the Buffalo River on the south end of the Quigney promenade.
Orient
beach is one of the safest beaches in
South Africa and, not surprisingly, is wildly popular because of this fact.
This feature also makes it incredibly popular with families although unlike
other East London beaches, it is not great for surfing. The gentle waves which roll in are not powerful
enough for surfing, but this makes them perfect for swimmers.
The beach
features a super tube that provides
extra fun for children and the stretches
of grass which line the beach mean
space is never an issue. There is also a children’s pool and changing
facilities as well as refreshment kiosks. The Orient Pier provides a great place for an idyllic stroll, breathing
in the fresh ocean air.
The beach
is a favourite amongst holiday makers because of its proximity to East London’s city centre as well as its proximity to
the local hotels and shops.
The ship
wreck that the beach was named after in 1907 can still be seen at low tide.
Prior to 1907 the beach was called 'Sandy Beach' but that changed when a Russian ship named the SS Orient ran
aground at the beach.
Before the
construction of the harbour on the one side of the beach, the beach extended all the way to the Buffalo River
mouth itself. It was also, interestingly, a recreation area exclusively for
men and women were strictly forbidden from going there!
