Pelonomi Hospital is situated in Heidedal, a suburb of Bloemfontein, the capital of the Free State province in South Africa. Pelonomi holds numerous impressive titles in the world of South African hospitals, and is unique in many ways. One of its claims to fame is for being one of the first public-private partnership health initiatives in the Free State.
The partnership between the Free State Department of Health the Netcare private health care group, incidentally one of South Africa’s largest private healthcare providers, is taking great bounds towards equal and accessible medical attention for all spheres of South African society. In this vein it is also the only (semi) private hospital in the Free State to be located in a neighbourhood classified as previously disadvantaged.
The Pelonomi Hospital opened its doors in 2005 and has been building up its solid reputation ever since. The hospital is relatively small, with only 87 beds at its disposal, and most of its patients are referred there from other hospitals and doctors. Despite its small size though, Pelonomi covers a broad range of specialities and has the means to treat a wide variety of health complaints.
These specialties include clinical psychology, ear, nose and throat surgery, general surgery, urology, radiology, obstetrics and gynaecology, internal medicine and orthopaedic surgery among other things. There are also occupational therapy services and physiotherapists on site. The beds are divided between a general medical and surgery ward, an obstetrics and gynaecology ward, a day ward, a small paediatric ward, a neonatal ward and an intensive care unit.
Other services available are a 24 hour emergency room and a retail pharmacy operating during normal office hours.
