Accommodation near Rhodes University

Rhodes University is one of South Africa's most respected academic institutions and the research which is produced there is of an international standard. The university is located in the small town of Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape, and it's fair to say that most life there revolves around the university.

Rhodes University, which is named after the famous figure in South Africa, Cecil John Rhodes has followed a similar trajectory to many of South Africa's other universities. That is, it began as a college and slowly evolved, going through various name changes and statuses before being hailed as a university and given a name that sticks.

The university was founded in 1904 as Rhodes University College then later became a constituent of the University of South Africa in 1918. In 1951 it became a fully accredited university and has been known as Rhodes University ever since.

Today Rhodes educates roughly 7000 students a year, across 6 faculties. The faculties are humanities, commerce, law, science, education and pharmacy. Between them there are 30 departments. The humanities faculty is by far the largest one at Rhodes and constitutes 40% of the university's student body.

Apart from its reputation as a celebrated academic institution, Rhodes University is also unique as up to two thirds of the student population lives on campus. There are 12 university residences on the campus. The students who attend Rhodes are from cities and towns all over South Africa in addition to some international students.

There is no doubt that Rhodes University is the beating heart of Grahamstown and during the university vacations (except for the June July holidays when the Grahamstown National Arts Festival comes to town) the town loses a big chunk of its population and is noticeably quieter.

Great. The parking guards are sometimes a little agressive, but the town is very beautiful.

We have been frequenting Grahamstown for a number of years due to our son schooling there, enjoyed the variety of restaurants that are now available, was however disappointed to see the cleanliness of the town has gone down.
- Warette Bawden

Disappointed about the state of the roads and the very poor water quality - this is a great concern as we are not booking accommodation there for the Arts Festival, based on these reasons.
