Accommodation near Steve Biko Academic Hospital - 2
The Steve Biko Academic Hospital has a rich history. The hospital was first established in 1890. It was a rather modest hospital that made provisions for a mere 130 beds. This became an exacerbated problem during the flu epidemic of 1918, as the hospital could not accommodate the massive influx of patients. Following this period, the hospital fell into a state of disarray and had to undergo a major face lift. The foundations of the existing hospital were laid in 1927, an original framework which still exists today. Since it was established, the hospital has undergone many name changes. It was originally called Pretoria General Hospital, but was later renamed to HF Verwoerd Hospital in 1967. HF Verwoerd Hospital was to become the Pretoria Academic Hospital following the end of apartheid. Finally, in 2008, the hospital saw one last christening and is now known to the public as the Steve Biko Academic Hospital.
Steve Biko Academic Hospital is located in Pretoria, north of Johannesburg. It simultaneously operates as a referrals hospital and a tertiary healthcare institution, offering highly specialised medical services to their patients. Patients are often sent from various nearby clinics, primarily from Tshwane District Hospital which is less than one kilometre away. What makes it a ‘one-of-a-kind’ is that it is the only hospital in South Africa to accommodate a hospital and a university clinical department in the same venue.
The hospital is state-of-the-art, boasting medical equipment valued at R442 million. The equipment is constantly monitored with routine updates and includes an inventory of MRI Scanners, a Picture Archiving Communication System (PACS), and CT Scanners. The layout of the hospital has been designed to ensure that the 21 operating theatres, ICU, and associated wards are situated on the same floor. This is advantageous as patients coming straight out of theatre aren’t dependent on lifts while being transported back to their wards.
Having been dubbed a fully-fledged hospital, Steven Biko Academic Hospital comprises of several facilities. These include an outpatient centre, a cardiac rehabilitation unit for those with coronary artery diseases, a Cerebral Palsy Clinic for children under 12 years, a dietician, occupational therapy, and more.
