Accommodation near The University of the Western Cape
The University of the Western Cape (UWC) is
one of the 4 most prominent tertiary education institutions in the Western
Cape. It is located in Bellville, in the
Northern Suburbs of Cape Town.
The university has a history deeply
entrenched with the Apartheid system. It was established in 1959 as the University College of the Western Cape -
a constituent college of the University of South Africa. Only so-called 'coloureds' were permitted entry into the institution and while 'black'
people were banned outright from any tertiary education, the education offered
at the college was certainly substandard, only preparing graduates for low to
mid-level jobs in schools, civil service and other areas which strictly served
only 'coloureds'.
The university played an active role in the fight against Apartheid,
an ugly period in South African history which still (indirectly) drives the
university's key emphasis on access,
equity and quality, where education is concerned.
The university boasts 8 faculties: arts, community & health sciences, dentistry,
economic & management sciences, education, law and natural sciences. Each
faculty has numerous departments and
offers a range of valuable and
interesting degree options.
UWC has a highly skilled staff with 50 percent of them holding a
doctorate. Furthermore, UWC prides itself as a research institution too.
Most departments have graduate
programmes and at any given time, 20
percent of the university's student body consists of postgraduate students completing research.
The university strives to offer a stimulating and supportive environment
for all its students and to this end there are many resources available to
students.

Miguel Capelo won a booking to the value of R2440 at Elim Bed & Breakfast
We (Sandra and myself) are truly grateful to everyone involved in this prize, including the owners Merlè and André from Elim Bed & Breakfast at Kuils Rivier Cape Town. Anyone reading this. If you are traveling somewhere and don't know anything about the town, here is a handy and tried protocol to use: 1) Phone the helpful people at sleeping-out (021 762 1543) 2) Tell them where you have to be and where you will be traveling. Tell them your budget and give them your email. 3) Sit back and wait. (Could take up to a full day) 4) Go through all the options they present to you - one by one and check (google etc) 5) Take your shortlist of places to stay and contact them. Hopefully, when they respond, they will have space available. They normally respond within the day. (Elim responded within 2 hours) Well done and thank you once again. Miguel Capelo

Kuils River is a nice place to stay. It is small, but busy. It has most of the things one would look for i.e shopping malls, banks etc.and transport can be easily accessed. It is a good place to visit and experience.
