Accommodation near Umgeni Steam Railway - 4
Umgeni Steam Railway is a vintage steam train railway station, situated in the picturesque Valley of 1000 Hills just outside of Durban.
It was formed in 1982 by a group of steam train enthusiasts from the Natal branch of the Railway Society of Southern Africa. Over the years, locomotives and coaching stock have been donated by the old South African Railways (SAR) or have been purchased from scrap yards. The fleet now includes a Class 3BR, a Class 12R, a Class 14R, two Class 19D's, a Garratt GF, a Garratt GMAM and a 1892 vintage Dübs Class-A. All the trains vary in age from 1892 - 1954.
Trains run from Kloof Station to and from Inchanga Station, on the last Sunday of every month and the journey takes place along the edge of the Valley of 1000 Hills scenery on the old main line which was built in the late 1800`s making it the oldest active railway line in South Africa.
The trip takes travellers up some of the steepest railway gradients in South Africa and through one of the oldest running tunnels, Drummond Tunnel, which was built in 1880.
On arrival at Inchanga Station, travellers can persue the Craft Market and visit the many food stalls on site. Another option is to take the 10:30 train from Inchanga for Kloof and have a sit down meal at the Station's Restaurant, and still be in time for the 12:30 train returning to Inchanga.
Umgeni Railway is a Section-21 non-profit making organisation and funds are used only for the preservation of steam locomotives and "railwayana" and to this day is still run solely by volounteers.
