Aurora Verblyf
Located on the West Coast of South Africa about 43kms North West of Piketberg, is the small town of Aurora.
While not being too far a drive from Cape Town, Aurora is a town unknown to many. However, over time it has risen out of relative obscurity due to its slow-paced lifestyle – ideal for retirees and those looking to leave the city lights behind them. Aurora is a predominantly rural town, that has, in recent years, become commercialized and a popular place to set up shop.
Aurora’s history is an interesting one. While some may assume Aurora to be named after the roman goddess of dawn, it was, in fact, a tribute to the daughter of the first Dutch reformed minister - Ceylonia Aurora Perreira. Aurora was the site of a major discovery when French astronomer, Abbe Nicolas de la Caille proposed, contrary to popular beliefs, that the world was pear-shaped. What ensued was decades of arguments put forward that tried to disprove this discovery by astronomers the world over.
To the north of Aurora lies the Piketburg Mountain – a popular tourist attraction unique in appearance due to its unusual rock formations and abundant vegetation. The mountain’s lookout posts give mountaineers a bird’s eye view of the region, where Table Mountain can be seen at a distance.
