Fourways is a district in the far north of Johannesburg, the capital city of Gauteng. It comprises about 8 distinct suburbs as well as 3 housing estates. The region is one of the most affluent areas in Johannesburg and is also one of the fastest developing commercial and residential hubs in Johannesburg’s northern suburbs. Fourways hotels are very close to Pretoria (to the north west) and also the recreational hot spots of Hartebeespoort Dam and the Magaliesberg Mountains (to the north east).

As is the case for many areas within cities, the Fourways district was once a farm. The 2.5 square kilometer game farm also had a large manor named Norscot Manor, a title inspired by the Erikson family’s (the original owners) Norwegian and Scottish roots. The manor house, which was built in the Cape Dutch style in the 1920’s was given over to the City of Johannesburg in the 1970’s and today Norscot Manor exists as a recreation center for the surrounding communities.

Some of the neighborhoods which make up the greater Fourways area include Broadacres and Norscot and the Dainfern Golf Estate. Generally speaking, each suburb has its own shopping mall, complete with restaurants, shops and cinemas, but the Boradacres Mall is a favorite because of the park enclosed within it, making it a safe place to go if you have children to keep entertained. Other malls include the Fourways Mall and Design Quarter.

The climate in Fourways is similar to that of greater Johannesburg. However, given its position so far north, it is a bit warmer, resembling Pretoria’s temperatures. When the weather is good, it is the perfect opportunity to leave your guesthouse or bed and breakfast and explore the Fourways Nature Reserve, or the Lonehill Nature Reserve, hosting two of Joburg’s 3 koppies (little hills) respectively.
