The Garden Route is well outfitted with charming, well-known towns such as Sedgefield, Knysna and Nature’s Valley, but a little known gem is the tiny settlement of Harold’s Bay. The town has little over 100 houses, giving an indication of just how small it is.
It is located about 15 kilometres from the Garden Route’s administrative capital, George, which provides a striking contrast! It’s proximity to George however, means that while life in Harold’s Bay remains simple and untainted by commercial enterprise, access to amenities like supermarkets, banks and doctors is easy as all these are found in the larger town. Perhaps the most notable amenity for travellers though the George Airport, a 5 minute drive away.
Harold’s Bay is linked to George historically too. It’s named for instance, after the first Dutch Reformed Minister of George, Tobias Johannes Herold. His name is more or less the only mark he left on the settlement though, and most other ways, Herold’s Bay (sometimes referred to Afrikaans as Herolds baai) has very little to do with George.
Many people are attracted to Herold’s Bay, precisely because it’s so quiet. There is no traffic or bright lights to obscure the sights and sounds of nature, allowing you to lose yourself in it. Nature is Herold’s Bay’s strong point, with a pristine beach, which is also protected from the South Easterly winds which sometimes come up, mountains and numerous nature reserves all on its doorstep.
The simplest holiday at Herold’s Bay is spent on the beach, swimming surfing and fishing, although many find birding in the area extremely satisfying too. As with spots all along the Garden Route, the mountains provide ample opportunity for hikers and mountain bikers.
In short, Herold’s Bay provides the ultimate getaway, from everything!
