Hoedspruit Verblyf - 9

The town of Hoedspruit is located in Limpopo province, at the base of the Klein Drakensberg mountains. It lies in the central lowveld, within close proximity to some of South Africa’s most impressive natural attractions. Its economy is therefore driven largely by eco-tourism, while agricultural activities have their part to play too.

The climate in this part of South Africa is subtropical and you can expect hot, humid summers with mild, dry winters. It is a climate which supports the cultivation of exotic fruits such as bananas, mangoes and citrus, and as a result Hoedspruit is surrounded by orchards. The water supply which supports farming in the area comes from two main sources, the Olifants River and the Blyde River, both of which also boost the eco/adventure tourism industry.

Among the things to do in and around Hoedspruit is white water rafting, done on both the aforementioned rivers. The Blyde River Canyon, which is a spectacular site, is within easy access too, and apart from admiring the view you can also try your hand at zip-lining or hiking.

There are numerous private game reserves and conservation projects in the area too, and between them you can get up close and personal with some of Africa’s most endangered species and try any number of African safaris, from horse-back and elephant-back safaris to walking safaris.

From Hoedspruit you can also drive out a short distance to ogle a giant baobab tree, and mosey down to the neighbouring town of Hazyview for a hot air balloon ride over the lowveld.

With the Kruger National Park, a major big 5 attraction, just down the road, Hoedspruit makes an excellent stop over or even a base from which to explore the Kruger park and surrounds.
