Port Alfred Verblyf
Take a drive from Port Elizabeth heading north east along the coast and you will soon find yourself in Port Alfred, a small town in the Eastern Cape. It lies almost exactly half way between Port Elizabeth and East London, both larger cities lying on the East Coast of South Africa. Port Alfred is said to be the heart of the Sunshine Coast, and taking that name in its most literal sense, it stands to reason that there is rarely a grey day when you are staying in Port Alfred accommodation.
The Sunshine Coasts earns it name from being the region of South Africa receiving the most sunshine hours in the country. Port Alfred forms part of a quartet of towns dotted along this section of coast which also include Alexandria, Kenton-on-Sea and Bathurst, home of the ‘giant pineapple’.
Apart from a pleasant climate, which includes summer rainfall and mild temperatures, the Port Alfred locals are also an extraordinarily friendly bunch who won’t hold back on extolling the virtues of this little town (which include the harbour and marina) and all there is to do there.
In 1859, William Cock made South African history by blocking off the Kowie River mouth, and canalising parts of it, creating the 1st man-made harbour in the country. Today the small harbour houses a number of small boats and the Port Alfred Marina is a major focal point of the town. Apart from being unique in that every property on the marina has water frontage and a private jetty, there are also some fun marina-based activities on offer.
For a relaxing jaunt, take a boat cruise around the marina, and if you are a more active sort of person, you can also hire a canoe or water pedalo and paddle or peddle your away around the water ways. Another draw card is that there are plenty of malaria-free game reserves nearby.
Port Alfred may be small, but it has good infrastructure. Those looking for accommodation in Port Alfred will find myriad options from luxury hotels to homely self-catering cottages. There are also modern shopping centres, a golf course and a variety of good restaurants.
