Prince Albert Olive Festival 2014 - 3

When one thinks of country life and foodie destinations in South Africa, Prince Albert should be one of the first towns that come to mind. A weekend spent there is guaranteed to leave you feeling relaxed and, most probably, a little thicker around the waist. With an eye-popping array of small wineries, cheese factories and olive producers, all offering tastings, it’s hard to imagine things going any other way. And that is before you even add the gorgeous scenery and many gourmet restaurants to the mix. Accommodation in Prince Albert is well worth reserving on a regular weekend, but over festival time, it’s a must.

The Prince Albert Olive Festival is much more than the name implies. While olives and all their incarnations certainly come into the mix, at its heart, the festival is about celebrating Prince Albert’s culinary scene, its wide-open spaces and showcasing its traditional form of Karoo hospitality to Prince Albert first-timers and regular visitors alike.

During the course of the weekend, festival goers will have the opportunity to sample the wines from Fernskloof wine farm and Bergwater wine farm (where Rococo chocolatier will be hosting wine and chocolate pairings). Various olive farms and olive boutiques will be open for business offering tastings of olive oils, tapenades and of course, straight up olives.

Wondering around the vamped up festival market will also give guests the opportunity to sample a variety of jams, biltongs, artisanal breads and various other fruit and olive products. This is not forgetting specials on the delectable Karoo lamb for which the region is famous.

Over the weekend there will be a beer tent and bar, a craft-market marquee selling all manner of sophisticated and interesting craft pieces and a stage, all set around the central market area. This area is where the festival-specific action will take place. This action includes an olive-bread baking competition, and olive pip spitting contest. Further activities planned for the weekend include a 22km cycle race and lots of live music, with talented local performers on the line-up.

In addition to the general festival vibe and special events, the usual Prince Albert activities will also be on offer, giving one the chance to go star-gazing, take a guided nature walk, a historical walk through the town or try out any of the great restaurants the town has to offer.

Thus for an unforgettable weekend, head to the Prince Albert Olive Festival.
