Streetopia Obs is an offshoot of the popular arts and lifestyle festival, Afrikaburn. For just one day, the southern suburb will be transformed into a creative playground filled with an assortment of arts, cultural and performance pieces. Take to the Lower Main road of Observatory on the 28 November 2015.
Observatory, known for its vibrant colours, textures and festive spirit, is an obvious choice for the Afrikaburn organisers to host such an event. Afrikaburn has a longstanding relationship with Observatory - it is the place of residence for their headquarters, workshops and is filled with commemorative Tankwa Town sculptures and art pieces.
While the organisers have been keeping mum about the line-up, some tidbits been disclosed that include a family-friendly picnic experience, a silent disco, various displays of art and performances. A highlight of the event is the Silent Disco, which includes performances by nine top notch DJS.
Steetopia Obs emulates the spirit of the original Tankwa Town, which encourages the visitors to embrace the experience by being active participants and not passive audience members. Says spokesperson of the event, "make a scene, create a happening, do that thing you love – the day’s activities really are entirely up to you".
Access is free with performances occuring throughout the day.
