Kameelhoek is a beautiful game farm situated approximately 40km north of the Pilanesberg (north-west of Johannesburg) and 17km west of the bushveld town, Northam. The Northam district is well known for its platinum deposits and is the home of the 4th largest platinum mine in South Africa. In fact, the Swartklip mine, approximately 10 km from the farm, is a town in its own right, with shops, banks and a hospital which may be frequented by non-miners on a private-clinic basis and offers excellent services in case of emergency.
The farm itself covers an area of 1300 ha with high game fencing all around and encompasses thick bush, sweeping grasslands and lovely mountains with extensive views.
Besides an abundant bird life, which offers a joyful experience for ornithologists, the following game can be viewed on the farm:
Blesbok, Bushbuck, Duiker, Eland, Gemsbok, Giraffe, Gnu (Blue Wildebeest), Impala, Kudu, Nyala, Red Hartebeest, Reedbuck, Steenbok, Waterbuck, Zebra, as well as smaller creatures that include Jackal, Warthog and Tortoise etc.. A Leopard family has also been spotted on the mountain.
The farm has three bush camps and a mountain camp which are well suited for groups. The camps are fully equipped with bedding, kitchen utensils and cooking facilities - in fact, all you need to bring is food (if you want to cater for yourselves), swimming towels and your own clothing. All bush camps are fully electrified and offer partial air-conditioning. A communal pool is shared by residents of the three bush camps. The bush camps are fully serviced and free firewood is provided. The Mountain Camp is very rustic, without a kitchen or electricity. However, it has ablution facilities, with shower and running water.
There is an extensive network of roads (± 70km) which can be used for cycling and walking. This is one of the major attractions of the farm, as one is able to experience the bush on foot or bicycle, instead of only from a vehicle.
Cell phone networks reach most parts of the farm.
