The Green Elephant is the closest hostel to Groote Schuur Hospital, in the heart of Observatory, where University of Cape Town (UCT) students from all around the world live and meet each other.
The attractions are pubs, coffee shops, restaurants, a golf driving range, the original Observatory, Groote Schuur Hospital ( where the world's first heart transplant took place, theatres and small art galleries. The annual Obs Festival is held on the first Saturday in December.

It is well placed for a base in Cape Town while you enjoy the benefits the Cape has to offer. Being in a student area, the pubs are full of young people and prices are low ! It is not as expensive other Cape Town nightlife areas.

We have 3 houses - the main house with all the facilities, a room house with private rooms and the long stay house where guests stay for as long as several months.


Our guests range from backpackers for a few nights to students and interns who stay for weeks or months.

We have accommodation for short and long term stays, you can book for a few days and use us as a base for finding long term accommodation or stay for months.
