Montusi is a spacious and quiet development in the Northern KwaZulu Natal Drakensberg near Royal Natal National Park. There are five privately owned holiday homes situated on the Montusi Estate, which are let to the public on a self-catering basis. These are separate to Montusi Mountain Lodge, but managed through the same office. Each cottage has magnificent views of the Drakensberg’s Amphitheatre, a World Heritage site. The 1000 hectare Montusi Estate offers guests a playground like no other, where they can hike, horse-ride, mountain bike and relax in a safe and pristine mountain environment. The expansive mountain views and distance from the road make the peace and quiet almost tangible. Activities abound: Daily guided hikes for a cup of tea in the wilderness are a highlight, but guests are free to explore without a guide. The hikes visit the bushman paintings in the Bushmen's cave; a lovely waterfall at the Waterfall Cave, the scenic riverside loop on the Wanhoop Loop or the spectacular views on the top of Montusi Peak The Drakensberg Trails MTB trail network incorporates the Northern Berg resorts and is accessible right from Montusi. The trails are purpose built and maintained and stretch for almost 100 km. The hiking paths and mountain bike trails double as excellent trail-running routes for all levels of runner. The Northern Horse operates excellent horse-riding trips from the Estate. The well-loved horses take guests over the mountains, fields and rivers on exciting equine adventures. There is a tennis court and swimming pool for guests to use, and the various dams provide fisher-folk with a great opportunity to throw a line, while adventurous folk might like a swim! The Montusi Mountain Lodge main building is only available to self-catering guests by special arrangement. Dinner and breakfast must be booked the day before. Advance bookings and walk-ins cannot be accommodated for breakfast and dinner because the Lodge accommodation is let on a catered basis and dining space is limited. Guests need to bring all their own food, swimming towels and torches. There is no grocery shop on the property: the closest town with shops, chemist and a doctor is 50km from us. The Montusi Self-Catering Cottages offer guests a peaceful escape where they can make their own timetables and completely unwind.
