Amathunzi Private Nature Reserve

From R1200 per Unit

For some it's simply the peace that comes with nature, with nothing but birdsong to distract. For others, the views: empty valleys studded gem-like with flowering succulents and grazing antelope, against a backdrop of undulating mountains. Vast blue skies that turn star-spangled when the sun dips behind these craggy peaks. But mostly it's the luxury of privacy, with only a handful privileged enough to find themselves ensconced in accommodation that is spacious, gracious and welcoming, in a privately owned reserve less than two hours from Cape Town.

This is the real luxury of Amathunzi: with a maximum of 24 guests sharing the 3000ha reserve, Amathunzi offers the kind of privacy and peace that is increasingly difficult to find - particularly within easy reach of a city. Choose from a choice of three privately situated accommodation options: the Lakeside lodge (above), which sleeps 10; the elegant Manor House, sleeping 12, and the rustic one-bedroom cottage. Click on any one of these options for more detailed descriptions and photographs.

Amathunzi attracts nature lovers, but it is also a great destination for wine lovers who can spend days exploring the best wine estates in the Robertson valley - at last count a choice of 31. White wine lovers shouldn't miss a tasting at Springfield, where winemaker Abrie Bruwer produces one of South Africa's best sauvignon blancs, and if you like your bubbly, try the classic Methode Cap Classique Brut at Graham Beck. If you are serious about your wine, we are happy to make more recommendations.

The lodge comprises five freestanding thatched chalets, all serviced by a separately located living area, outdoor lapa and pool. The placement of the freestanding chalets allows each guest total freedom. The lodge can be booked on a fully-catered basis or you can book the whole facility on a self-catered basis. The lodge living area overlooks a seasonal lake, and is spacious and comfortably outfitted to accommodate a small party of guests. The main lounge is ranged around a log-burning fireplace (firewood supplied), with the dining room area leading out to the large timber deck, with further seating. There is a TV lounge area, a guest toilet and a well-equipped professional catering kitchen. Dine under the stars, near a roaring log fire - near the pool area is an enclosed boma, the ideal place to celebrate the end of another perfect day. Each freestanding chalet has its own bathroom (separate tub and shower), a wood-burning fireplace and shaded stoep from which to enjoy the views. Chalets are furnished with a well- sprung king-sized beds; one has a separate lounge area which can accommodate an additional two children. The pool is privately located behind a beautifully constructed dry-stone wall, built in the same time-honoured tradition as those created by the first farming pioneers. The nearby boma, surrounded by an acacia thicket, is the ideal place to finish the day, with a candle-lit dinner under an African sky.

The manor house, located a short driving distance from the lodge, is ideal for a close-knit group of friends or two families, with generous living spaces, two separate accommodation wings and breathtaking views. For many the huge stone-clad pool, with its stunning mountain and lake views, encapsulates the sense of space that typifies life in the Amathunzi manor house. Slide-and-fold doors create a seamless indoor-outdoor flow from the living areas to the deep shaded stoep and pool. Sharing an open-sided fireplace with the lounge is the dining room-cum-kitchen - a comfortable size for entertaining on a large scale. The dining table (seating 12) opens onto the shaded stoep, which has a large built-in braai (wood supplied) as well as another 12-seater table to make the most of the stunning views. There is also a TV-library-games room off the large entrance hall. The manor house has six bedrooms in two separate accommodation wings. The main bedroom (king-size bed) is a huge light-filled room with French doors opening onto the stoep and mountain views; the en-suite bathroom also makes the most of these views. Similarly so the secondary bedroom (queen-size bed) and bathroom. Bedrooms three and four are both furnished with two single beds and share a generously-sized bathroom with tub and separate shower. Bedrooms five and six are in the second wing; both are furnished with queen-size beds and share a bathroom.
