From R400 PPS
Five Assegais Country Estate is a hiker's paradise. There are a number of 1 and 2 day hiking trails that take you into the hidden beauty of the Highveld Escarpment. Explore red cliff gorges, dense indigenous forests, sandstone labyrinths and fragrant grasslands. Waterfalls galore! The Uitkomst Falls are the second highest in Mpumalanga. Home to a stunning array of game, birds and trees. All our trails are rated by HOSA as Green Flag (pristine landscape) and moderate to difficult.
Candlewood Camp overlooks Uitkomst Falls and is styled on Miner Prospecting Huts. This camp has no electricity but plenty of charm.
Hot water is supplied by a wood-burning geyser. Lanterns are provided and there is solar lighting in the kitchen. Indoor and outdoor braai areas. No outdoor braais between May and October because of the risk of veld fires.
The kitchen is fully equipped - pots, pans, gas plate, cutlery etc.
There are two huts that sleep 10 people in single bunk beds.

BEST TIME TO GO
This is a good trail to do all year around. Summer months are warm but there is a high chance of rain. Winter months are cold in the evenings but dry during the day.
On the R541 between Machadodorp and Badplaas in Mpumalanga. We are 3 hours from Johannesburg and 1.5 hours from Nelspruit.
No children under 10 years old on the trails. Infants and toddlers strictly prohibited - there is a high chance that people can slip and fall and all the facilities are shared. Hopefully they can join us when they are older.
Dogs are allowed at Candlewood Camp as long as they keep their owners under control. There is plenty of game on the property. No dogs on the Oom Paul's Backpackers route.
FLORA AND FAUNA
After a massive land restoration program (that continues today) this 1,500ha nature conservancy is now home to 109 different species of trees, game (wildebeest, blesbok, jackals, baboons, civets, hartebeest and zebra) and birds (bald ibis, louries, fish eagles and vultures to name a few). There is a stunning display of aloe flowers from June to August.
This green camp has two 'miner prospecting' huts sleeping 10 people each. Kitchen and bathroom facilities are shared. There is no electricity but some solar lighting and lanterns are provided. Hot water comes from a wood-burning geyser.
