Groenewald's Guesthouse is well-located in Strand within easy reach of the Wine Route. Very nearby is Somerset West nestling at the foot of the Hottentots Holland mountain range. It has it's own Helderberg Wine Route boasting 13 cellars, of which Willem van der Stel's historic Vergelegen is included. There are several more turnoffs onto wine routes via Stellenbosch a mere 20 kms away. A panorama of vineyards and winding oak-lined roads takes one to whitewashed historical homesteads and wine cellars in Stellenbosch, Paarl, Franschhoek and Wellington. Local wine routes offer cellar tours and tastings of South Africa's top wines.
The beautiful Helderberg Nature Reserve has many short hiking trails for you to enjoy. The Kogelberg Nature Reserve is in the vicinity too.
Whale watching is a pleasant afternoon past-time at nearby Gordon's Bay, a naval village at the coast. A scenic drive along the coast past Gordon's Bay, Rooi Els, Pringle Bay, Betty's Bay, Kleinmond and Hawston takes you to Hermanus, only 80kms away. Hermanus is world renowned for closeup whale watching from the land. The whale watching season is from June through to December and Southern Right, Bryde and Humpback whales are most common.
