Kaaimans River Cottage

  • Lowest Price Guarantee

From R1295 per Unit

Only accessible by rowing boat (we provide the boat and a manager will show you how to row), and situated on the banks of the Kaaimans River is this beautiful holiday cottage. Family owned and steeped in local history, it is a perfect get away from it all. The cottage is charming, delightful, and has its own unique style.

The Kaaimans River is ideal for canoeing, swimming, and lazing around on the idyllic secluded beach at the river mouth.

The river is tidal, and if you are lucky, you can catch a spring tide, where green sea water comes all the way up the river. The spring tide is really special, and it is a never to be forgotten experience to ride the incoming bores of sea water all the way up the river.

Further up the river, one can visit a beautiful Waterfall. The ideal time to view the Waterfall is after strong rains as it is at its most spectacular. However, when it is more gentle, this is the time to book an abseiling trip with Eden Adventures in the gulch.

The cottage:
. Three bedrooms (one bedroom with a king size bed, two bedrooms with two single beds in each room ie 4 single beds total).
. Two bathrooms
. Self Catering
. Sleeps 6
. If you would like to bring extra children, then 2 more kids (not adults) can be accommodated on the floor in a large open area upstairs. For this, visitors would need to supply their own bedding. For mattresses, the lounge couch cushions are fine bearing in mind that once the kids are sleeping on them, then they are no longer available for use in the lounge. Otherwise visitors must bring their own mattresses.
. A generator provides electricity at night after dark. Petrol for the generator is for the visitors to supply. The generator uses approximately one litre per hour. We recommend that visitors also bring head torches as these are incredibly convenient for use when the generator is not running (eg if you want to get up in the middle of the night for a bathroom visit).
. Hot water, a fridge and a stove run on gas.
. There is a braai. Please supply your own braai wood/charcoal.
. A roll of toilet paper will be available to keep you going if you forget to bring your own, but you should probably bring more.
. Please bring your own cleaning fluids, washing liquid, matches.
. A rowing boat is supplied.
. We require an additional R1200 security/breakages/damages deposit for the use of the rowing boat and the house. The deposit will be returned immediately when the rowing boat is returned to us, together with the oars, the rowlocks and the anchor, in good order.
. Please bring your own bath and beach towels.
. Please bring your own bedding and linen.

Points to Note:
. We are close up against the mountain so there sometimes can be are a small number of spiders sometimes in the house. They are of the flat type that you get in the Wilderness. They stay against the walls usually near the ceiling and stay away from people. There are typically between 0 and 1 per room.
. We are near the N2 - expect some traffic noise especially over peak season. The best months to visit are November & February (weather good, lower traffic), following by December & January.
. Please wear shoes after dark. We are close to the mountain and close to nature. If you were camping or hiking in the forest, you wouldn't walk around barefoot after dark. We recommend the same approach.

Here's a list of what to bring:
. Shoes that can get wet (crocs are ideal)
. Swimming costume
. Torches (head torches are best)
. Towels
. Cleaning fluids
. Toilet Paper
. Food
. Car cell phone charger for charging your phone whilst out and about in your car (or you can use the generator power in the evening to charge your phone with a normal charger)
. Warm clothes
. Cool weather clothes
. Beach clothes
. Covered shoes for walking around after dark
. Matches for the braai.
. Own braai wood / charcoal if you don't want to collect braai wood on the beach.
. Own bedding/linen. We supply clean sheets on the beds. The rest is up to the guests to bring.

We supply:
. Gas operated fridge
. Gas stove / oven
. Gas run hot water
. Generator powered lights - Please bring your own petrol if you wish to run the lights. One litre of petrol lasts approximately one hour.
. Boat
. Braai (grid, tongs)
. There is a lot of braai wood on the beach for you to collect if you like.

What we don't have at the house:
. Microwave

This is not a party venue. We do not cater for things like "bachelor" parties. If the idea is to have a massive big drunken party, note that this is not permitted. We reserve the right to terminate such parties and excess and ask rowdy, drunken, out of control guests to leave if this situation develops at the cottage.

The cottage is ideally suited to families with kids who would like to get away for a relaxing back to nature beach/river experience.

We are more than happy if people are having a good time. If you have a few guests who want to visit for a braai or spend the day, then that is fine. Check with us if you're unsure - we are happy to accommodate most requests.
