Five Assegais Country Estate is a hiker's paradise. There are a number of 1 and 2 day hiking trails that take you into the hidden beauty of the Highveld Escarpment. Explore red cliff gorges, dense indigenous forests, sandstone labyrinths and fragrant grasslands. Waterfalls galore! The Uitkomst Falls are the second highest in Mpumalanga. Home to a stunning array of game, birds and trees. All our trails are rated by HOSA as Green Flag (pristine landscape) and moderate to difficult.
Pongola Express is the base camp for the following trails:
Pongola Express to Aloe Kaya Loop - A two day, 15km circular route. You enjoy stunning gorges and red stone cliffs through indigenous forests. Keep an eye out for the caves, birds and game. A circular route starting and finishing at Pongola Express Camp. Spend your second night at Aloe Kaya.
The Num-Num Trail - a 5-day, 36.5km trail taking you through an amazing variety of terrains from yellow-wood forests to sandstone labyrinths.
Pongola EXPRESS - FACILITIES
This is like sleeping in an antique. There are two 1934 railway carriages with a large socialising deck and newly renovated kitchen. Panoramic views of the Skurweberg. There are 7 railway compartments sleeping 2 - 4 people in single bunk beds.
There is electricity and hot water. Bathroom, kitchen and showers are shared. The kitchen is well equipped with cutlery, pots, pans etc. There are indoor and outdoor braai areas. There is a fridge, microwave, kettle and a gas oven.
A nearby stream is great for swimming in.
SAME NAME, DIFFERENT PLACE
This camp is named after the original train that the carriages were part of. It is no where near Pongola near Piet Retief.
WHAT TO BRING
To ensure that your trip is safe and enjoyable please bring with you:
. Hiking boots and socks. Flip-flops and tekkies are not appropriate for any of the trails.
. Sleeping bag, pillow and a towel
. Food and drinks for your stay. There are no nearby shops or restaurants.
. Walking stick
. Rain gear - it is possible to experience ALL weather conditions in one day
. Fleece, especially in winter
. Swimming costume
. Water bottle. It is safe (and delicious) to drink the water at the camps and on the trails. Do not refill or drink from stagnant pools!
. First aid kit (including plasters and antiseptic), sunscreen, insect repellent
. Matches / lighter
. Extras - camera, binoculars, batteries, mobile chargers, book, cards etc.
You do NOT have to bring:
. Kitchen equipment (i.e. cutlery, crockery, pots and pans)
. Cooking stoves
. Toilet paper
. Firewood (available for R20 per bundle at each of the camps)
. Tables and chairs
BEST TIME TO GO
This is a good trail to do all year around. Summer months are warm but there is a high chance of rain. Winter months are cold in the evenings but dry during the day.
On the R541 between Machadodorp and Badplaas in Mpumalanga. We are 3 hours from Johannesburg and 1.5 hours from Nelspruit.
No children under 10 years old on the trails. Infants and toddlers strictly prohibited - there is a high chance that people can slip and fall and all the facilities are shared. Hopefully they can join us when they are older.
Dogs are allowed at Pongola Express as long as they keep their owners under control. There is plenty of game on the property. No dogs on the Oom Paul's Backpackers route or The Num-Num Trail.
FLORA AND FAUNA
After a massive land restoration program (that continues today) this 1,500ha nature conservancy is now home to 109 different species of trees, game (wildebeest, blesbok, jackals, baboons, civets, hartebeest and zebra) and birds (bald ibis, louries, fish eagles and vultures to name a few). There is a stunning display of aloe flowers from June to August.
You sleep in a 1934 renovated railway carriages. Bedrooms are compartments sleeping 2 to 4 people. There are 7 compartments all together. There is also a cottage sleeping 6 This is a hiking destination for hikers, the accommodation is basic communal bunk beds, the kitchen is fully equipped with internal and external braai's. There are various hiking packages on offer from day walks to 5 day hikes.
