Overview

Schalkenbosch Wine Estate is situated in the mountains above historic Tulbagh - a ten minute drive from the village along a gravel farm road. The self catering cottages are set in the Gardens of Schalkenbosch Manor House which is a national monument and was built in 1792.

Schalkenbosch Wine Estate has been awarded Championship status by the Biodiversity in Wine Initiative, joining 14 other Estates in South Africa, such as Anglo American's Vergelegen, Graham Beck, Backsberg, La Motte and Lourensford.

The BWI is a pioneering partnership between the South African wine industry and the conservation sector. The goals are to minimise the further loss of threatened natural habitat, and to contribute to sustainable wine production, through the adoption of biodiversity guidelines by the South African wine industry.

Schalkenbosch is a peaceful retreat away for the hustle and bustle of city like and the cottages all have panoramic views of the surrounding majestic mountains, valley and vineyards. The activities make the most of the natural environment with abundant bird life, fishing, mountain walks or hiking and mountain biking for the more adventurous.

Tulbagh lies in a beautiful 'hidden valley', surrounded by the Winterhoek, Witzenberg and Obiqua Mountains. The Tulbagh Valley is at the western end of the famous Route 62, which meanders through all the Wineland areas of the Western Cape and Karoo.

Each cottage is spacious, comfortably furnished and fully equipped to enable you to look after yourselves should you not wish to visit one of the restaurants or coffee shops in the village. A cosy fireplace and private barbeque area ensure a comfortable haven after a busy day wine tasting, exploring or lying by the pool.

We recommend a visit to the nearby village of Tulbagh with its historic Church Street, in which there are 32 national monuments, museums and restaurants. The mountains surrounding Tulbagh rise to some 2100 metres above sea level. The village is 105 kms from Capetown, an easy drive along the N1, via the R44 through breathtaking scenery. Tulbagh has remained unspoilt since the late 1600's. It was first settled by farmers sent out by the Dutch East India Company and has a rich history with many colourful characters, such as Lady Anne Barnard whose travels and exploits have been well documented.
