Accommodation near Birds of Eden
If you happen to find yourself on the
Garden Route anytime soon, you will be excited to learn about the diverse array
of attractions there are to choose from. From pretty Knysna with its waterfront
restaurant, to Plettenberg Bay with its lengthy beach, and the myriad wildlife
sanctuaries in between there is never a dull moment.
Birds of Eden is an animal sanctuary
managed by the same group who run Monkeyland and the Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary.
It is a member of the South African Sanctuary Alliance and Fair Trade Tourism,
ensuring that everything they do is fair for their employees and
environmentally responsible.
Birds of Eden, which is roughly 16
kilometres from Plettenberg Bay, is the biggest free flight aviary in the
world, boasting a 2 hectare dome of which 70% consists of indigenous forest.
It is however large enough to provide a number of niche habitats for the 3500
bird species found there. This number has been growing since the sanctuary
opened in 2005, and boasts an approximate 50/50 split between exotic bird
species and indigenous African species. Some of the species found there include
parakeets, channel billed toucans, terrestrial bulbuls and olive thrush.
The birds which come to the sanctuary
usually have a sorry story to tell, with histories in confined spaces. Many
have been confiscated from zoos and dealers while some are turned in by their
owners who grow tired of their pets.
An experience at Birds of Eden will not be
forgotten in a hurry and is intriguing and fun for all ages. Generally
visitors take themselves on a self-guided tour, following up to 2 kilometres of
boardwalks, from which you can view all sorts of birds including water birds
like ducks and flamingos.
Distances are shown as the crow flies and not necessarily the actual travelling distance.

Plettenberg Bay! I never knew a town could feel so much like holiday. The shops, scenery and special places like Robberg - all wow. This is on top of my list for a revisit. Quite close to some of my great life experiences like Birds of Eden, Monkeyland and others. Don't ever just pass by.
