Accommodation near Greyville Racecourse
Greyville Racecourse is a horse-racing track in Durban, KwaZulu Natal. It is a notable track in South African horse-racing circles and hosts many popular racing fixtures. It also has some unique features and its proximity to some of Durban’s top attractions makes it a convenient spot for horse-racing fanatics to check out on their tour of the city.
Durban’s first horse-race occurred in 1844 on a site near to the current track. Today, Greyville Racecourse itself is over 100 years old. Annually it plays host to the Greyville Gold Cup and the Vodacom Durban July, both prestigious races attracting some of South Africa’s best jockeys and most impressive thoroughbreds. It is certainly a significant course!
The track is pear-shaped, covering a total distance of 2800 metres. Oddly, there is a large subway which passes under the course, giving it a unique topography. As a result of the subway, the majority of the track is uphill, with an almost equal downhill distance and brief flat sections at the start and finish of the course. Another unique feature of the course is the floodlights which allow for evening, mid-week meets. Greyville was the first racecourse in South Africa to have these lights installed.
Sitting in the stands, over-looking the track, you will notice yet another oddity about the track. The centre of the race track is home to the Royal Durban Golf Club, bringing two prestigious sports together in one location. In the background, the congested buildings of Durban’s CBD are visible and just beyond them the tall skyscrapers which make up Durban’s popular tourist hub, the Golden Mile.
The subway which passes under the race course is a thoroughfare between the Berea, the CBD and the aforementioned Golden Mile. This subway, as well as the many other transport routes which connect Greyville to other parts of Durban, means that the track is easily accessible.
