Accommodation near Strand Beach

Strand is a small city of about 50 000 people. It is 50 kilometres south east of Cape Town in the Western Cape and lies below the Hottentots Holland mountain range on the coast between Macassar and Gordon’s Bay. By far its most prominent feature and best draw card is its beach, officially known as Melkbaai beach.

The Strand beach is one of the country’s most renowned because it not only has a pleasant setting, but is exceptionally safe for swimming. The beach, which stretches for 5 kilometres along the edge of Strand, consists of soft white sand. Combined with the view of the mountains in the background as well as the relatively warm water and protected nature of False Bay, it is easy to imagine how this beach could be considered the perfect place to veg out on the coast or take a jog or stroll up and down its length.

Aside from the safe swimming and rock pools begging to be explored by little people, Strand beach is renowned as a surf spot. In the short stretch of beach, there are approximately 6 or 7 individual surf spots. Many of these are slightly offshore, but there is enough wave action near the shore to keep children and beginner surfers more than happy too. There are other water sports practiced at the beach too, with kayaking springing to mind immediately.

There are a number of attractions near the beach too, like Dune Park which keeps the crowds entertained with mini golf and super tubes among other things. The promenade is lined with bars, restaurants and coffee shops for a more sedate style of beach enjoyment.

Beautiful would just like to see police activity as there was an incident with very young people drinking and breaking the beer bottles in the street and throwing them at vehicles. When reprimanded by another lady they just laughed at her and carried on. Pips security also tried his best to reprimand them asked them to move away from area and clean up their mess which they just left lying around. Other than that we love Strand, clean and safe.

The Strand has a very nice, relaxed atmosphere and is an enjoyable place to holiday. We visited the area in March and it was still relatively quiet. At night we went to sleep with the sound of crashing waves and in the early evenings we sat eating ice cream on the beach front and watched the sea. The shopping malls are close enough so that you can go to the movies and visit the restaurants and the Strand is close enough to Stellenbosch if you want to spend an evening walking through the old town. I would really recommend it.
