Actonville Stadium is a large venue in Benoni, a city in the Ekhuruleni District Municipality. Benoni is one of the cities on the East Rand in Gauteng, and more than that, is considered the service hub for other East Rand towns such as Brakpan and Springs. If Actonville Stadium is the purpose of your visit to Benoni, you will soon find out that Benoni is a nice place in its own right.
Given its position on the East Rand, it’s not surprising to learn that Benoni was initially established as a mining town. Today, while gold mining still contributes to the local economy, the focus has shifted more to other industries, particularly service industries, as mentioned above.
This small city has another claim to fame, that being the large amount of space – most of which is occupied by horse stables. It is said that Benoni has the largest concentration of horse stables per kilometre than anywhere else in the Southern Hemisphere.
Benoni is also home to a variety of suburbs, some more leafy and suburban than others. Actonville, the suburb in which the Actonville Stadium can be found, and the stadium’s namesake, was set aside for people classified as ‘Indian’ during the Apartheid times and over the years it has been used for religious festivals (Indian and otherwise). It is primarily used for local soccer matches and other community sports activities.
Since Benoni is sometimes known as the ‘City of Lakes’, once you are done visiting Actonville, you can visit the lakes and possibly indulge in some retail therapy at the unique Lakeside Shopping Centre. It is built in the shape of a steamboat right on the banks of a lake, providing a novel mall experience.
