Aggeneys Airport is a tiny airport just outside the town of the same name. It is located in the Northern Cape of South Africa, a semi-arid region and one of the provinces with the lowest population density in South Africa.
The airport is 807 metres above sea-level and has an asphalt airstrip. Due to the rural location of the town, it also has no scheduled flights and serves mainly small aircraft and chartered flights.
These flights most likely transport business people who are involved in the mining industry. The town of Aggeneys, after all exists because it serves the large Black Mountain Mine as well as others in the area. It sprung up on the farm Aggeneys, soon after the mine was opened and its purpose was to serve the mine.
The Black Mountain Mine is to the west of the town and has large concentrations of zinc, lead, copper and silver. In fact, the area surrounding Aggeneys, with its hills, mountains and inselbergs contains some of the richest known mineral deposits, especially of zinc, lead and copper.
This area also boasts some of the most diverse and complex geology in Southern Africa, attracting scientists and academics from far afield.
Finally, Aggeneys, which ironically means ‘Place of Water’, is the epitome of an oasis. Surrounded by a dry, rocky landscape it is a surprising island of greenery. The town, of course, doesn’t have enough of its own water and most of its water supply is pumped from the Orange River, which is not too far away.
The town and its airport are situated on the N14 between Springbok (to the west) and Pofadder (to the east). It is very close to the border with Namibia.
