Accommodation near Alkantstrand - 3

Alkanstrand is a great beach in the town of Richard’s Bay in the far north of KwaZulu Natal. Richard’s Bay is found near the border of Mozambique, at the mouth of the Mhlatuze River. The 30 square kilometre lagoon provides Richard’s Bay with one of the largest harbours in the whole of South Africa. And for many years it was one of the major ports with regards to imports and exports passing through South Africa’s borders. While it is still a relatively busy port, that is no longer its only claim to fame.

Alkanstrand beach (the name Alkanstrand meaning ‘both sides of the beach’), is one of South Africa’s beaches which has achieved Blue Flag status. Being so close to the Mozambican border, it is the most northern blue flag beach in South Africa.

The Blue Flag is an international initiative which sets strict standards with regards to the management of a beach. It relates to all aspects of that management, from the environmental management plan to the safety and convenience of beach users.

The Alkanstrand beach was awarded Blue Flag status a number of years ago and it is currently a favourite beach for locals. There is ample secure parking, wheelchair access and neat, well-maintained ablution facilities. Behind the beach there is a restaurant which has wind-protected seating and a nice view of the Indian Ocean. There is also a grassy patch with braai places and space for picnics.

This Blue Flag beach operates as such year-round and during the high season, from November to March, there are educational activities on offer. The wind is sometimes an issue in Richards Bay, but thanks to the harbour’s breakwater, the beach is protected.
