Athlone Stadium was built in 1972 and can be found on the Cape Flats, located in the city of Cape Town. While it functions as multipurpose stadium, it primarily hosts soccer matches. The size of the stadium is massive and is able to host a maximum of 30 000 spectators at a time.
The venue acts as a practice venue for amateur sports players and premier soccer league teams. It is a regular stomping ground for the local teams Ajax and Santos.
The stadium is renowned for being one of the two training venues for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. To prepare for world cup, the stadium underwent reparations to the value of an astounding 297 million rand. These preparations included laying down a new grass pitch and upgrading the spectator’s stand.
Today, spectators can enjoy various luxuries and facilities upon their visits to the stadium, including a VIP area, boardrooms, conferences centres and meeting rooms, and a banqueting area.
