Bakhoven Beach is a small Cape Town beach, situated on the popular Atlantic Seaboard. This narrow stretch of coast begins in Hout Bay, to the south of the city centre, and clings to the edge of the mountain as far as Greenpoint, a vibrant suburb, known for being Cape Town’s gay hub, to the west of the CBD.
Camps Bay, a wealthy residential suburb and well-known tourist hotspot, lies tucked between the icy Atlantic Ocean and the spectacular Twelve Apostles section of the iconic Table Mountain. Just beyond it, to the south, lies the cosy little beach known as Bakhoven.
Where Camps Bay is a long flattish beach flanked by palm trees and very much a part of the vibey atmosphere of the club and restaurant-lined Victoria Road, Bakhoven is a much more secluded spot, tucked below street level and surrounded by large, smooth and round granite boulders. When you are on the small beach, it is easy to block out and forget the chaos of the Atlantic Seaboard’s main drag, which for many, makes it a perfect Cape Town destination.
Bakhoven, facing out across the Atlantic and ‘furnished’ with soft white sand and pretty little shells, has a great view – a view very similar in fact to that of Camps Bay. The difference however is in the crowds – or lack thereof. Even if the beach was full of people, the numbers would be limited by Bakhoven’s small area. This is hardly an issue though, because despite its obvious beauty and convenient distance from the Cape Town CBD and other Atlantic Seaboard suburbs, Bakhoven remains a less-frequented beach than its neighbours.
If you are looking for a beautiful secluded patch of coastline to enjoy a sunrise, sunset or anytime in between, Bakhoven is definitely a good place for you.
