Accommodation near Balule Nature Reserve - 7
In the 1990’s, the area of Balule comprised of private farms, before a group of landowners removed the fences that separated them. By the end of the decade, most had joined in on the initiative. The reasons for doing so were in aid of conservation; to increase the number of grazing areas for local wildlife and reduce the threat of poaching. The amalgamation lead to the development of the Balule Nature Reserve; an ever-expanding 40 000-hectare park which forms part of the Greater Kruger National Park.
Game viewers will have the opportunity to spot members of the Big Five as well as other smaller mammals roaming freely about the park. Herds of zebra, wildebeest and impala can found, grazing in open grasslands, while predators such as lions and cheetah lie under shaded, coveted areas to escape the midday heat. Situated in a sub-tropical lowveld, the area is covered by a diverse variety of flora as well as 336 recorded tree species, including Baobabs, Mopane and Marula Trees.
Twitchers are encouraged to bring along their guidebooks, as the reserve boasts an abundance of birdlife. To date, there are 220 recorded species, including raptors such as the Lappet-faced vulture and the Martial eagle.
Overnight visitors can make use of the various accommodations available in the park, which include luxurious game lodges and private resorts. These establishments offer a comfortable stay within the bush.
Visitors who are looking to embark on a unique safari, which sees them getting up-close-and-personal with various forms of game, can sign up for a walking tour in the Kruger National Park. Under the guidance of an experienced game ranger, you’ll have the opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the bushveld. Furthermore, without the roar of your 4x4 scaring off wildlife, you’ll be able to encounter herds of animals at close range.
