Bayworld is an exciting educational and research complex in Port Elizabeth. It is also one of PE’s most popular attractions. The Bayworld cluster includes the Port Elizabeth Museum (the 3rd oldest in South Africa), No 7 Castle Street Museum and Bayworld itself, the snake park and oceanarium.
The Port Elizabeth Museum was the pioneer exhibition establishment in the Bayworld enterprise. Its humble beginnings came about in 1856 when a room in the town hall building was assigned for a historical display. In 1919 it was finally awarded larger premises, when it came into its own. Today The PE Museum blends cultural and natural history in displays which include dinosaurs, marine life, maritime history, and local and cultural displays.
Some of the highlights are said to be the 15 metre skeleton of the last Southern right whale harpooned in the bay, a life size replica of the Algoasaurus and a 5 metre bronze cannon recovered from a Portuguese galleon which was wrecked on the Port Elizabeth coast line.
Bayworld’s oceanarium has a number of small tanks which focus on the sea life of Port Elizabeth’s Algoa Bay. There is also an Africa penguin pool and a seal enclosure. Bayworld exists largely as a research and educational institution and its tanks and displays are used primarily for these purposes.
No 7 Castle Street is an old Victorian home which has been preserved. Declared a national monument, it is the oldest home in PE and the inside has been furnished to give visitors a sense of what life was like for the early settlers.
The museums are found in the Port Elizabeth neighbourhood of Humewood, on the Nelson Mandela Bay beachfront. Bayworld is a great place to be educated and entertained simultaneously.
