Accommodation near Cape Point
Cape Point is a renowned tourist attraction 60 kilometres from the centre of Cape Town. It lies at the very tip of the Cape Peninsula, with the Atlantic Ocean to the west and False Bay to the east. Contestably, it’s at Cape Point that the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet, although many claim that this actually occurs at Cape L’Agulhas.
Cape Point is not only a popular attraction for its undeniable scenic beauty, but also because it has a rich maritime history. In the olden days, Cape Point was an easily discernible navigational landmark which alerted sailors that they were close to the famed Cape of Good Hope. However, as Bartolomeu Dias’s name for it indicates, the point could also be a deathly hazard if the fog was thick or it was a dark night. In 1448 he named it the ‘Cape of Storms’, an ode to its wild character.
One of the touted activities at Cape Point, which forms part of the Table Mountain National Park, is to take the old ‘Flying Dutchman’ funicular, named after a purported ghost ship, to the lighthouse. This lighthouse, which was built in 1859, is still used as the centralised monitoring point for all of South Africa’s lighthouses.
There are many activities to get involved in at Cape Point, like mountain biking, walking or swimming and picnicking on one of the secluded beaches. While you are getting up to all this you should look out for the wildlife, which includes baboons, zebras and South Africa’s largest antelope, the eland. If you’re in the mood for splurging, the deck at the Two Oceans restaurant will knock your socks off with its incredible view of False Bay.
