The Cape Town Science Centre is located on Main Road in Observatory, Cape Town.
It is an educational facility that uses fun and interactive methods to teach science, technology, mathematics and engineering.
The Centre is housed in a building designed by Max Policansky, a forefather of modernist architecture and style in the city. The mainy body of the centre is a massive open plan room with over 280 interactive exhibits on display.
Some of the exhibits you can expect to see are:a human gyroscope, a kinetic acoustic sculpture, a train set with mini-people whizzing round the tracks,a black hole simulator, a hyperbolic slot, massive revolving wheel that people can ride in, a replica of Mark Shuttleworth’s Soyuz space capsule,a hovering ball and much much more.
A recent addition to the centre is an outdoor area with a demonstration of how to save water by harvesting rainwater and a gian chess set.
The centre runs special programmes during school holidays which include activities such as building robots, extracting DNA from onions and competitions to see who can build the tallest tower from spaghetti and marshmallows.
There are twice monthly special events during term time and school groups visiting the centre are given special rates and guided around the centre by one of the knowledgable staff members.
The centre attracts between 126 000 and 138 000 visitors annually.
