Accommodation near Castle of Good Hope - 7
The Castle of Good Hope was declared a national monument back in 1936, but today is recognised as a provincial heritage site. It is located in the heart of the Cape Town CBD, and not surprisingly, is a popular attraction for visitors to Cape Town and is also a common destination for primary school outings.
The pentagonal (or star-shaped) fort is a relic of note. It is located on the foreshore, a stone’s throw from the Cape Town City Hall, the Grande Parade and the central train station. It was constructed in the 17th century to replace the original, less-hardy fort built by Jan van Riebeek when he arrived at the Cape of Good Hope with the purpose of setting up a replenishment station for the Dutch ships sailing between the Netherlands and Indonesia. The fort, which was owned by the Dutch East India Company, is regarded as the best-preserved example of the company’s fortresses.
Viewing the fort from the outside reveals little of the world which existed within the thick, impenetrable walls. Upon entering the fort there is a striking yellow building with beautiful details, dividing the inside of the fort into two. Inside it is a museum of sorts as well as venues which are hired out for special occasions.
Within the fort was to be found a variety of spaces from living quarters and a bakery to prison cells, shops, a church and workshops. Taking a stroll through the fort will bring the Cape’s history to life and it is interesting to imagine people living and breathing within the fort’s walls.
The Castle of Good Hope is a definitely worth a visit for those who are fascinated by the city’s history.
